Preparation Tips for UPSC Mains 2026
With the Mains examination approaching, candidates should focus on revision, answer writing and time management rather than starting large amounts of new material.
- Follow a Daily Revision Strategy
Divide the available preparation time according to the examination sequence. Give priority to the papers that appear first.
- Practice Answer Writing
Regularly practice 10-marker and 15-marker answers within the prescribed time. Focus on introduction, structured body, relevant examples, diagrams wherever appropriate and a concise conclusion.
- Revise Current Affairs
Integrate current affairs with static portions of the syllabus. Use contemporary examples, government initiatives, reports, data and case studies wherever relevant.
- Prepare for Essay Paper
Practice essays on diverse themes including social, political, economic, philosophical, environmental and technological issues.
- Revise Ethics Case Studies
For GS Paper IV, practice case studies under timed conditions and develop a clear framework for identifying stakeholders, ethical dilemmas, options and the best course of action.
- Focus on Optional Subject
Use the days available before the optional papers for intensive revision of Optional Paper I and Paper II, especially PYQs and frequently tested areas.
Important Reminder for UPSC Mains Candidates
Candidates should carefully check their admit card, examination centre, reporting instructions and the latest official UPSC notifications before appearing for the examination. Examination dates and instructions should always be verified from the official UPSC source.
